Helotes Pioneer Woman

Helotes history is replete with women who endured much hardship to raise their families in the wilderness. One such woman was Jesusa Maria de la Garza who, on January 22, 1859, married Shelly Augustine Lee.

Jesusa, who was 19, was the daughter of Marcelino de la Garza (1802-1877) and Gertrudis Fuentes (1798-1875). Her father was a descendant of one of the original Spanish families that arrived in Texas in the 1700s. He fought for the Republic of Texas against Mexico in the Battle of Bexar in 1835. He owned property in what is now Main Plaza in San Antonio, where he operated a blacksmith workshop.
