Max Martinez-Helotes Blacksmith

Maximo “Max” Martinez (1859-1940) was one of Helotes’s early blacksmiths. His parents, Manuel and Teodora (Lazarin) Martinez, were from Nacogdoches. Manuel, a tailor, had a commission to make uniforms for the Confederate Army as the Civil War commenced. After he finished the job, he took his wife and two children, Maximo and Nicolosa, and left Nacogdoches, eager for distance from the war.
